Technology never stops evolving, and we have been subjected to several advancements. No, we’re far from achieving a flying car, but we have certainly seen our fair share of advances in the automobile industry. Automatic cars, for example, have been a boon for many car enthusiasts and commuters. An automatic car is one in which the driver does not need to shift the gears manually. A gear stick is attached to a gearbox called a transmission. It is an essential element of a vehicle as it alternates the power from the engine to the wheels and helps control the speed of the car. Usually, if you observe a manual car, you will see three pedals, the accelerator, the brake and the clutch. However, there are only two of them; the grip is absent. So, transmission in an automatic car heavily relies on a torque converter to shift the gears correctly. A torque converter is nothing but a fluid coupling that transfers the power from a vehicle’s engine to the transmission, i.e., the equipment. An automatic transmission has three components, a direct-shift gearbox that helps in smoothing the acceleration process and fast shifting. The Tiptronic allows manual movement to take place if it is required. Lastly, the hydraulic is the pressure or the fluid inside the transmission. An automatic transmission car makes a load of manual shifting of gears easy, so most people prefer this type.

Now that we know what an automatic car is, breaking down the different types is essential. Buying new and used automated vehicles is one thing but possessing in-depth knowledge is significant before purchasing. There are five main types of automatic cars for sale out there that you should familiarise yourself with.

Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT)

A dual-clutch transmission or DCT is the most advanced one out there in the whole advanced car technology market. It is also known as the Direct Shift Gear or DSG; however, both have slight variations. The DCT is essentially a dry clutch, while the DSG is a wet clutch meaning it runs on oil while the former does not. The DCT utilises a twin-clutch system wherein when one clutch is engaged, and the other is ready to make the shift when the car speeds up. Brands such as Hyundai Volkswagen, Kia Seltos and Ford Figo have adopted this technology.

Automated Transmission Manual (AMT)

An AMT is a one-step upgrade to your regular manual cars where there is no clutch present but sensors and actuators that perform the task of a clutch. It is also known as a semi-automatic car or a clutchless manual transmission. This transmission type is more affordable and is seen very frequently in India. It was introduced in the country by Maruti Suzuki Swift and is seen in other brands like Tata Nexon, Renault Kwid etc.

Continuous Variable Transmission (CVT)

Instead of sifting through a range of pre-set gears, a CVT uses pulleys connected via a chain belt having a cone at each pulley to change the gear ratios. This works for a smooth and quick shift, enabling a smooth ride for you. It is used in many cars such as the Maruti Baleno, Honda City and Jazz, Datsun Go and Nissan Micra.

Torque Converter

The torque converters launched the concept of the automatic car, and as we explained above, it works by using a fluid coupling system. Unfortunately, it does not offer a fixed gear ratio, and even though the power transmission is exceptionally smooth, it can suffer from manual lag. Nevertheless, if you are looking for a reliable car for prolonged use, this is the best option. Mahindra XUV5OO, Tata Hexa, Hyundai Verna, Skoda Rapid are some models that use a torque converter.

Intelligent Manual Transmission (IMT)

An IMT is essentially one that does not use a clutch with a gearbox.  So, in an IMT, the sensors and actuators control the clutch while you have to shift the gears manually.  Kia Sonet and Hyundai Venue are some cars that make use of IMT.
