This is a no-brainer that your wagon requires fuel to run but have you ever thought about how it happens and what's the process behind it? For all the automobile geeks out there, this one's for you. Your car has a fuel injection system that is responsible for the motion of your car. Engines combust a fuel-air mix into their chambers to move the pistons to create a reciprocatory motion that transfers through a shaft into your wheels to set your car in motion. That was the basic idea of a fuel injector system. There are different types of fuel injectors in the market right now, and every next one becomes better. Now you must have numerous doubts rising in your brain, such as how the fuel injection works, which type of fuel injection in luxury cars are there, etc.

You will find the fuel injection system in diesel engine cars, but later in the 1950s, it got introduced in petrol engine cars. The fuel engine system in luxury cars was first used in automobiles by Mercedes Benz. The fuel injector system replaced carburetors, which were not the only imprecise way of obtaining an air-fuel mixture but unreliable in most vehicles, primarily cars. Here is a little guide to give you a basic insight into the fuel injection system’s working.

The three essential components can either be separate devices or partially combined: fuel injector, fuel distributor, and fuel pump.

Fuel injection systems are popular in fuel-efficient cars because they provide better fuel economy and performance.

Direct Fuel Injection - How does direct fuel injection work

Common amongst diesel cars, as the name suggests, this fuel injector working system sprays the air-fuel mixture directly into the combustion chamber. Fuel engine systems in luxury cars like Audi and BMW are starting to use the direct injection system in their vehicles because the fuel is sprayed right into the engine. It offers high levels of power and efficiency.

Indirect Fuel Injection- best indirect injection diesel engine

It is found mainly in petrol cars, but now it is also gaining popularity amongst diesel engine equipped cars. Fuel is injected into the inlet manifold or inlet port rather than directly into the combustion chambers. Before the main combustion chamber, fuel is injected into the specially shaped pre-combustion chamber, which has a narrow passage connecting it to the cylinder head. It assures that your fuel is thoroughly incorporated with the air before it invades the chamber.

Throttle Body Injection System

The first type of injection system ever used by vehicles, TBIs working, is similar to a carburetor. The fuel gets sucked into the cylinders because of the suction created by the engine. However, TBIs get managed by an electronic computer within the vehicle, which provides precision.

Multi-Port Fuel Injection System

As the name suggests, they come with multiple intake ports. These intake ports are positioned accurately on the outline of the engine’s cylinders. In MPFI, every cylinder obtains its direct spray of fuel. So in a four-cylinder engine, there would be four injection ports. There was a slight issue in these as sometimes waiting for the next stroke, the fuel used to condense in ports, making it usable. It provides better fuel economy than TBI but still has its set of cons.

Sequential Fuel Injection System

Defeating the main issue with MPFI systems, sequential fuel injection is also known as a timed injection. It triggers each nozzle individually at the optimized time to assure all the fuel makes it into the intake valve. This method can further diminish fuel waste. Also, it presents the most optimized ratio of fuel to air in the combustion chambers. There was an option to control timed injection either mechanically or electronically.

Continuous Injection -central sequential fuel injection

As the title says, the fuel is squirted into the inlet port when the engine is running. The injector acts as a spray nozzle to break up the fuel into a fine spray, like turning a tap on and off as it doesn't control the fuel flow.

  • If the injection is mechanically controlled, the injector is spring-loaded into the closed position and gets open by fuel pressure.

  • If you control the injection electrically, it is kept closed by a spring but gets open by an electromagnet, cast into the injector body. The electronic control unit defines how long the injector stays open.

Does fuel injector cleaner work and how long does it take for fuel injector cleaner to work

Yes, if you use them the right way, they work. Check your car manual to know how often you need it, but generally, clean it whenever you change oils. Injector cleaners work and can stop new blockages from forming, but they won't help with the large ones already there. Inexpensive and efficient, you can give them a try for a smoother ride.
